Course introduction

On your 3-week Fashion Design course you will deep dive into research methods and design processes, developing strong fashion design ideas, and experiencing a similar journey to that of an undergraduate Central Saint Martins student in forming your own creative fashion identity.

You will be expected to push your ideas to expand and explore what is possible through the design process utilising different design techniques. You will engage with London’s streets, museums, exhibitions, cultural centres, stores, fabric shops and people watching, all as backdrop for your inspiration, research and investigation.

Entry requirements

English requirements

You should be proficient in written and spoken English and be able to participate in group discussions and make presentations. As a guideline we would expect you to have an English language level equivalent to IELTS score of 6.0. A certificate is not required.

Academic requirements

This course is open to all levels and is suitable for students over 18 wanting undergraduate-level study.

Course details

In addition to sketchbook work, you will drape on mannequins and experiment with mixed media materials. You will discover the significance of fashion illustration and be taught by some of CSM’s most experienced fashion illustration tutors.

You will develop your own drawing style with processes such as analytical / figurative observation, marking making, stencils, mono prints, rubbings, collage, papercuts, rubbings and 2D to 3D exploration.

You will engage in conversations with classmates and be supported by one-to-one tutorials. This course will stimulate and challenge you in the same way fashion students at CSM are stretched every day. The work produced at the end of your course will form a group exhibition, as well as form an important part of your own fashion portfolio.

Tutor information

Joshua Beaty is an artist, designer and educator living and working in London. He graduated from the BA and MA Fashion Programmes at Central Saint Martins as a recipient of the Samsung Award, the Sarabande Foundation Scholarship and the Louise Wilson Fund Award. He has worked with Julie Verhoeven, Charles Jeffrey, Fantastic Toiles, Phoebe English, Dover Street Market, Love Magazine, Joyce Hong Kong, David Lynch’s Silencio, La Musee des Beaux-Arts d’Orleans, amongst others. As an artist, he has exhibited internationally. From 2019-2021 he was artist-in-residence at Sarabande; the Lee Alexander McQueen Foundation.
Joshua joined the BA Fashion academic team in 2019 and teaches across all design pathways.

Anna-Nicole Ziesche graduated in BA and MA Fashion from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, UAL. Her shift towards film and performance began in the last year of her MA Fashion. Her film ‘Infinite Repetition’ (2000) was a radical departure for Anna-Nicole Ziesche and marked a turning point in fashion communication practice because it utilized the medium of film to unveil the continuously evolving designs and shapes of garments.

Anna-Nicole Ziesche works as a Visual Artist and Pathway Leader on the BA (hons) Fashion Design Womenswear at Central Saint Martins, UAL (since 2015). She was a Research Fellow in Design for Performance at London College of Fashion, UAL (2009-2015)

Exhibitions include RMIT Design Hub, Melbourne, Australia (2015), Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, France (2013+2015); Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rottterdam, The Netherlands (2009); Museum of the Moving Image, New York, USA (2007), V&A Fashion in Motion, London, UK (2001).

Simon Gray is a visual artist based in London. After studying Fashion Print at CSM he went on to design prints for Akeem Smith, Martine Rose and Nasir Mazhar. In recent years, Simon has contributed to Fantastic Toiles, a collectively run retail platform by independent designers and artists.
Simon teaches drawing on BA Fashion Jewellery at LCF alongside illustration work and set design. Known for his playful approach to drawing classes, Simon combines costume, set and music, and advocates a bold and expressive style in illustration.

Heather Sproat  graduated from BA fashion Womenswear at Central Saint Martins in 1993. Heather studied the unique Haute Couture tailoring techniques as at the Christian Dior Haute couture atelier in Paris.  
Heather went on to be appointed as a Designer at Louis Vuitton. She began her academic career teaching on the Womenswear course in 2000 at Central Saint Martins and is now joint pathway leader for the BA Fashion Womenswear course. Amongst the graduates she has taught in the last 24 years are designers, , , , , , , , , , ,

She has led collaborative student fashion design projects with external partners such as Louis Vuitton, Dior, Balenciaga Museum, Victoria&Albert museum, Nike, Penhaligons, Canada Goose and Bvlgari.

Materials

Please bring with you to the first session: 

Students will be provided with a sketchbook and layout pad. You will need to supply all other art materials including

  • Sketching pencils
  • Black pen
  • Colouring pencils
  • Digital camera (and/or camera phone)

Other art materials are optional and can be purchased at a discounted price from the college shop.

Summer Study Abroad Award

We offer a Summer Study Abroad Award for all of our 3 week Summer Study Abroad courses.

To be eligible, you must be 18 years or older, hold an offer to join one of our 3 week Summer Study Abroad courses, and be enrolled on an undergraduate degree programme outside the UK.

  • The award covers the tuition-fee only and depends on you successfully enrolling for the course. Our cancellation policy still applies.
  • Award winners will be asked to take part in promotional activities to promote Summer Study Abroad, including social media posts and takeovers, and blog writing.
